Drilling and
blasting is an effective method to remove granite cliffs by creating controlled
fractures using precise boreholes and explosives.
The drill and blast technique
involves two main steps: drilling precise holes into the granite and then
placing explosives in these holes to
fracture the rock. By optimizing hole
patterns, explosive types, and post-blast handling, granite can be efficiently fragmented
and transported while minimizing environmental and health risks.

drilling lines, then blasting was likely used to push stone out.
These lines are not visible to the drivers, and you need the right lighting to see them.
I agree with the idea that the widening will leave the experience the same, if care is taken with rock removal
and 'artistic aging' of the newly exposed billion year old rock
faces...but gone forever will be the 'narrow, intimate' experience.
